Beschreibung
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank with over 200 experts working to accelerate solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resource management, and fair economies. With offices in Winnipeg, Geneva, Ottawa, and Toronto, IISD's work affects lives in nearly 100 countries. The Geneva office hosts teams focused on Economic Law and Policy, Energy, Resilience, Communications, Project Management and Monitoring and Evaluation, and the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF).
Depending on the team and project, responsibilities may include conducting research and editing, supporting event management and communications, developing outreach products (articles, newsletters, press releases, op-eds, infographics, videos), managing social media platforms, media relations and monitoring, data visualization, project logistics and operations support, budget and timeline monitoring, and reporting deliverables to donors. Interns are assigned to a program staff member who sets objectives, manages their work, and provides feedback. Interns are expected to be present at IISD's Geneva office on a regular agreed schedule.
Applicants must be enrolled in a master's level (MA, MSc, LLM, etc.) or PhD degree program at a university based in Switzerland during the internship dates. The internship must form part of the university curriculum and count toward academic credits. Applicants must be fluent in English (spoken and written), demonstrate excellent academic performance, and hold a valid Swiss residence permit (student B permit, B permit, or C permit) or Swiss citizenship. A cover letter and CV in English are required, with the cover letter specifying the IISD Geneva team to which the applicant is applying. Additional advantages include relevant academic or professional experience aligned with an IISD team's focus, proficiency in French or Spanish, and a written statement of support from academic supervisors or professional referees.
IISD offers a structured Autumn 2026 internship (September to December) of 3 to 4 months, with up to 40 hours per week during university vacation periods and 15 hours per week during term time. Interns receive an allowance covering a monthly public transport pass in Geneva and a per diem for lunchtime meal expenses. The program provides hands-on practical experience in sustainable development policy research and policy-making, opportunities to develop research, writing, organizational, and communications skills, and the chance to build valuable professional networks. Exceptional interns may be invited to continue on a consultancy basis after the internship concludes. IISD is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and encourages applications from historically marginalized groups.
