The University of Lausanne (UNIL) is a leading international teaching and research institution with nearly 5,000 staff and 17,000 students across the Dorigny campus and the CHUV and Epalinges sites. UNIL promotes excellence, recognition of individuals, and responsibility. The Institute of Geography and Sustainability (IGD) brings together around 130 members working in geography and sustainability, with 24 professors and nearly 60 doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The IGD offers an international, interdisciplinary, and stimulating research environment. This position is advertised under the responsibility of Prof. Valérie Boisvert and focuses on biodiversity credits as innovative financing mechanisms for the conservation of endemic species. The graduate assistant will conduct independent doctoral research in geography or environmental sciences on the theme of biodiversity credits, with application to the Bonobo Credits programme launched in 2025 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Research topics may include policies, discourses and practices of biodiversity conservation; finance and biodiversity (credits, certificates, innovative financing mechanisms); metrics, evaluation and quantification of biodiversity; and the role of local communities and issues of ecological justice. The doctorate will be jointly supervised by Prof. Valérie Boisvert and Dr Victor Narat (CNRS, France). At least half of working time will be devoted to personal research; the remainder will support Prof. Boisvert's activities, including supervising students and organising and leading seminars, as well as contributing to IGD activities. The candidate must hold a Master's degree (or equivalent) in humanities and social sciences (geography, anthropology, political science, economics, etc.) with an orientation towards nature conservation issues, or a Master's degree in life sciences with openness to humanities and social sciences, or a multidisciplinary Master's in natural sciences and humanities and social sciences. Required qualities include curiosity, autonomy, commitment, rigour, and adaptability. Very good analytical skills and the ability to present work orally and in writing are expected. Proficiency in French and good knowledge of English are required. The IGD offers a stimulating research environment and a culture conducive to developing a research career. Graduate assistants are part of international research networks and are encouraged and supported to participate in annual conferences. A competitive salary and financial support for fieldwork and conference participation are provided. Various opportunities for further training are available at UNIL or within Swiss organisations promoting doctoral research. UNIL is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, an open and respectful environment, work-life balance, and supporting the next generation of scientists. The initial contract duration is one year, renewable up to a maximum of five years (2 x 2 year renewals).
